Pound
(Ezra Loomis) (1885 - 1972) poète et essayiste américain. Il vint en Europe en 1907; à Londres, il se lia avec Joyce et T.S. Eliot, et publia (1917) ses premiers Cantos. En 1925, il s'installa en Italie. Critique (Comment lire, 1929; A.B.C. de la lecture, 1934), Pound, rallié au fascisme, invectiva les Alliés à la radio italienne. Arrêté en 1945, il fut interné aux È.-U. dans un hôpital psychiatrique jusqu' en 1958, puis il retourna en Italie. Il a laissé 109 Cantos.

(Robert Vivian) (né en 1919) physicien américain d'origine canadienne. Il a contribué à l'invention de la résonance magnétique nucléaire (R.M.N., 1946).

Le fer qui sort de dessous mes marteaux, jouit depuis long-temps d'une bonne réputation, et se vend de 28 à 30 pounds le tonneau (367 à 390 francs) (CRÈVECŒUR, Voyage, t. 1, 1801, p. 285). Ce Béasse, qui fut pendu en 1830, était un Français (...) enrichi (...) il s'était retiré à Guernesey (...). Béasse donc était fort bien vu, attendu ses pounds, même de l'aristocratie escarpée de Guernesey (HUGO, Choses vues, 1885, p. 265).

Terme de relation empr. à l'angl. pound, issu du vieil angl. pund qui, avec ses correspondants germ., provient prob. du lat. pondo « en poids » et plus spéc. (libra) pondo « livre »; le vieil angl. pund « poids d'une livre » att. dep. 805-831 désigna également la monnaie corresp. à ce poids en argent (ca 975 ds NED).
